After winning season 14 of the Great British Baking Show in 2023, Matty Edgell proved to the judges (and the audience) that his baking skills are unmatched. The following year, when he married Lara Lucienne on May 31, 2024, in a countryside wedding in Hertfordshire, England, Edgell decided to make use of his talent in the kitchen by baking his own wedding cake. On June 5, 2024, the reality show winner shared a behind-the-scenes look at the decorating process on the morning of his big day and the finished product on the night of his nuptials.

In the carousel that he posted on Instagram, the first photo in the slide shows a closeup of the confection: a three-tier cake covered in white buttercream and adorned with brightly-colored strokes. An assortment of vibrant flowers also surrounded the dessert, which was placed on a lucite cake stand that rested on a slab of wood. “The brief was ‘make it colourful’ in fitting with the rest of the wedding!” Edgell exclaimed in his caption. A wedding cake topper, the couple’s names in gold writing, completed the treat.

Following the photo of the cake was several videos of Edgell assembling the dessert and putting the finishing touches on it. “Swipe along to see how I stacked the cake at the venue the morning of our wedding😅… and how it went down on the night!” the caption continued. According to the clips, after Edgell placed the bottom tier on the cake stand, he carefully added the middle tier on top before coating the perimeter in piped icing. Edgell then set the top tier in place and repeated the following step: using icing to cover any cracks in the display.

Next, Edgell uploaded a clip of the wedding cake table at his wedding reception. In addition to the finalized confection, the spread also included floating candles and a framed sign, noting the flavor of each tier. In his Instagram post, the baker shared the unique tastes. “Flavours:🍫Bottom – Chocolate genoise, chocolate French buttercream & chocolate brownies,” he listed. “🫒Middle (personal favourite) – Olive oil & orange with whipped pistachio ganache. 🍋Top – Lemon & rosemary with summer fruits jam. All covered in a Swiss meringue buttercream.”

To conclude his post, Edgell shared a photo of himself and his bride cutting into the colorful cake on their wedding day. As Lucienne—clad in an ethereal A-line gown featuring floral appliqués—sliced into the middle tier with the groom—dressed in a green suit—by her side, their guests cheered around them, with many documenting the moment on their smartphones. Edgell also ended his caption by encouraging his followers to reach out if they have any questions about baking their own wedding cake.
