Kennebunk shipbuilder George W. Bourne carved the home’s gothic wood trim that gives it the appearance of a wedding cake.

KENNEBUNK, Maine β€” One of Maine’s most iconic homes is up for sale.

Kennebunk’s Wedding Cake House, built in 1825, was listed last week for $2.7 million. George W. Bourne, the original homeowner, carved the home’s gothic wood trim that gives it the appearance of a wedding cake.

The 6,263-square-foot Summer Street residence, which includes a barn and carriage house, boasts eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms on a 2.2-acre lot on the banks of the Kennebunk River. It’s known as the most photographed home in Maine and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“This is a rare opportunity to own this elegant and historic property,” the listing reads.

Other features of the home include a two-story mural of Kennebunk, a spiral staircase, and a Chickering piano.

The home has changed hands only a handful of times over the years. Its current owners, Hunt and Katie Edwards, asked the town approve a zoning change so they could turn the property into an inn and host weddings and other events, but officials rejected the plan after neighbors expressed concern about possible noise, among other complaints.

The house is the subject of a book, “The Wedding Cake House: The World of George W. Bourne.”
