A bride has been praised for getting revenge on her mother-in-law who tried to wear a white wedding dress to her big day. The 23-year-old bride came across numerous problems when planning her special day, as her own mum and mother-in-law wanted to have their say in every single thing.
She said: “Planning this wedding was no walk in the park and there were multiple fights between myself and the mothers – my mother and his mother – like decor, what table I wanted to use, round or square, even what style dress I wanted to wear, but the cherry on the cake was my mother-in-law’s outfit she was planning on wearing.”
After outlining a strict ‘no white’ dress code policy to guests, she was shocked to see that all the outfits her mother-in-law had earmarked to wear at the wedding were in fact white. After trying a range of tactics to try to change her mind, the woman, who goes by the name of Rissie06 on Reddit, enlisted the help of her husband who could “tell her straight up not to wear white.”

Believing everything to be OK, she was dumbfounded when her mother-in-law opened up a dress delivery one day, unveiling a wedding dress: “Thank goodness it was one of those ‘expectations vs reality’ moments and the dress quality was terrible and went straight to the trash,” she said.
Following the dress distress, the woman hatched a plan with her sister and bridesmaids to punish any guest who turned up in white. “And so the ‘Jacket of Shame’ idea started,” she said. “My sister helped me shop for the perfect jacket. A yellow reflective jacket you see construction workers wear. My sister set up a decorating station at my bridal shower to decorate it and it turned out to be quite the hit. My friends and family members enjoyed writing things like: ‘How dare you show up in white,’ ‘Are you the bride? I think not”. You get the point.”

With the jacket prepped and ready for anyone who turned up to the wedding in white to wear it all day long – even in the professional photographs – the bride said her mother-in-law ended up turning up in all black: “She wore a funeral outfit to our wedding. I took it as a win, but I keep getting shade every now and then from his mother and aunt about how inappropriate the jacket was and that I was such a b****.”
Reddit readers were quick to respond to her story, with one finding the whole saga funny: “I bet a few guests were waiting with popcorn in the hopes someone showed up in white.” One noted the mother-in-law’s choice of colour in the end: “I love how she pivoted to all black funeral wear. Clearly she was mourning her big day as mother of the groom.”
One reader confessed her own mother-in-law drama, stating: “We are literally eloping to avoid my mother-in-law’s main character syndrome. The jacket of shame is brilliant.” Another sided with the bride, saying: “I’d put all my money down on a bet that literally zero other guests were in any way offended by the jacket.”
