Destination weddings have become very popular worldwide as couples choose to tie the knot in exotic locations, and South Africa has emerged as one of the most popular among Americans.

This is according to a global study conducted by South African jewellery and wedding band business GoldTrust, which looked at monthly searches related to booking a wedding in each country in Africa.

The study evaluated almost 2 000 different terms that American nationals searched on Google to highlight their interest in African weddings. Some of the terms include “book a wedding in South Africa.”

The findings revealed that various African countries have become the desired destination for weddings, especially among people from different parts of the world.

The top three countries on the continent include South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria.

Jewellery expert at GoldTrust Meg Steyn said this is a significant milestone that citizens should be proud of.

“As South Africans, this recognition should fill us with pride and encourage us to continue promoting our beautiful country as a top-tier destination for those looking to tie the knot.

“It also presents an excellent opportunity for the local wedding industry to further capitalise on this interest, potentially leading to increased international visits and supporting the local economy.”

Popular African wedding destinations for Americans

As the most desired wedding destination in Africa, South Africa boasts 2 550 monthly searches this year.

With breathtaking venues in the veld, mountain chapels, and picturesque sunset beaches, it’s no wonder South Africa has become popular.

One Vogue-featured American couple who tied the knot in Stellenbosch, South Africa, said they wanted to make the wedding an occasion to remember for their guests.

“As soon as we were engaged, we decided that we wanted our wedding to be an opportunity for our friends and family from the States to plan an adventure they’d never forget, so Cape Town and the Winelands made for the perfect destination,” said South African-born Michael Lindenberg who married Matthew Owens.

The couple held their weekend wedding at one of the old farms in the area known as Babylonstoren.

In second place is Ghana, which has 2 290 searches. In addition to affordability and easy access, the country boasts a diverse range of scenic backdrops, including stunning coastlines, dense rainforests and tranquil waterfalls.

With 2 270 searches, Nigeria completes the top three, thanks to its rich tradition, its culture of grand celebrations, and popular dishes.

Other African countries that have gained popularity as wedding destinations for Americans include Morocco, Egypt, Mauritius, Cameroon, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Sudan and South Sudan.
