The couple behind those stunning Snowcastle wedding photos – Cabin Radio

6 minutes, 20 seconds Read

Yellowknife’s Snowcastle may be closed for the year but for a US couple, memories of this year’s castle will live on forever.

You’ve likely seen the stunning photos of Matt and Becky Farrell, who travelled from near Boston to get married at the Snowcastle, a castle of snow and ice that forms the centrepiece of the annual Snowkings’ Winter Festival on the frozen Yellowknife Bay.

“It was just amazing,” Becky said.

“It was hilarious when the Snowking came out of his little shack and proclaimed his love to Becky,” Matt added.

They said Yellowknifers helped to make the day magical by officiating the wedding, helping with hair and makeup, and taking photos.

“Everybody was so nice, so helpful and accommodating,” Becky said.

Becky is a veterinary technician who works at an animal hospital specializing in dermatology, while Matt works in security technology. They met while Becky was studying at the University of Rhode Island alongside Matt’s sister.

The couple said they ended up travelling to Yellowknife to get married after discussing bucket-list items and how they both wanted to see the aurora borealis.

When they began researching potential trips, they learned about the Snowcastle – and its availability for rental.

“We’ve been together for 16 years, going on 17, and people obviously ask us a lot: ‘When are you guys going to get married?’” Becky said.

“We were always like, we have to do something fun and crazy.”

They were able to see the northern lights on the trip, and went dog sledding and snowmobiling. Now, they hope to come back and see Yellowknife in the summer.

“I highly recommend visiting,” Becky said. “I can’t talk enough about it to people back home.”
