The Duke of Westminster’s Wedding Hit by Environmental Protesters – Town & Country

The society wedding of the year, with Prince William as an usher, was always going to attract plenty of attention. However, the day took an unexpected turn this afternoon when a protest created commotion as the couple and Prince William left the cathedral.

Protesters from organization Just Stop Oil set off orange smoke from a fire extinguisher as Hugh Grosvenor and Olivia Henson made their way to their car following the service. Police intervened and Just Stop Oil said that two of their supporters were arrested. The organization is demanding an end to the extraction of burning oil, gas and coal by 2030. Their attention-grabbing protests have also included throwing soup at Van Gough’s Sunflowers in the UK’s National Gallery.

Members of the public standing near to the protest expressed their shock yesterday after the bride and groom had departed. “She had a trolley like a pensioner’s trolley on wheels,” one woman told journalists. “She just let it go off.” Another woman nearby said she thought it was confetti at first before realizing that there was a protest going on. Crowds simultaneously cheered the wedding party while booing the protest.

“At around 12:30 p.m., two Just Stop Oil supporters used fire extinguishers to project powder paint near the entrance to Chester Cathedral, whilst billionaire aristocrat Hugh Grosvenor and his new wife Olivia Henson made their way towards a waiting luxury 8-Litre Bentley, after leaving their wedding service and standing for photos,” Just Stop Oil said in a media release today.

Streets near to the cathedral had been lined with barriers and there was a strong police presence ahead of the midday wedding.
