Tom Allen speaks of pride at making documentary My Big Gay Wedding to mark a decade since the legalisation of – Daily Mail

Tom Allen has spoken of his pride at making a documentary to celebrate 10 years of gay marriage,

The comedian, 40, is fronting My Big Gay Wedding which is set to air on BBC One on Wednesday 27 March at 9pm.

It will follow the planning of a dream wedding for gay couple Adam Johnson and Dan Mackey.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act won Royal Assent on 17 July 2013, meaning queer couples could marry in England and Wales from 29 March 2014.

Peter McGraith and David Cabreza from North London were the first gay couple to marry at one minute past minute on 29 March 2014.

In Tom’s documentary he recounts growing up gay and looks at how far LGBTQ+ rights have advanced between then and now.

He also follows the planning of Adam and Dan’s wedding as their loved ones help them create a spectacular day.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, Tom spoke of his pride at making the programme. 

He said: ‘I have got a documentary coming out tomorrow. My Big Gay Wedding celebrating 10 years of gay marriage and that goes out tomorrow at nine on BBC One. 

‘I am very proud of that, it’s my first ever documentary. It’s been an experience.’ 

He joked: ‘I always say, have people forgotten their vows? Is that why they renew them?’

Ahead of the broadcast, Tom said in a statement about the documentary: ‘The fact that same-sex couples couldn’t get married here just 10 years ago means we should never be complacent about the progress we’ve made and so it’s only right to celebrate it thoroughly.

‘I’m looking forward to making this joyous celebration of love and gay marriage, or garriage as I like to call it.’

The couple featured in My Big Gay Wedding also spoke of their feelings ahead of their nuptials.

Adam said: ‘This documentary celebrates an important moment for the LGBTQIA+ community and gave Dan and I the opportunity to share our love for each other in a loud and proud way.’

Dan added: ‘Both Adam and I love being creative and getting stuck in, making a dreamlike day come to life where we could break traditional wedding rules.’

My Big Gay Wedding with Tom Allen airs on BBC One on Wednesday 27 March at 9pm.
