8 minutes, 40 seconds Read

Billionaire’s wife Katherine Asplundh went viral after allegedly trying to buy an Instagram handle from a woman with her same name. But many people have been left wondering who she is – and why she needs a specific username on her online platforms.

In an alleged exchange between her and a woman with the same name, Katherine asks Kate to sell her Instagram handle as it’s her new married name. However, after being refused, Katherine turns nasty and accuses Kate of being a fake person and says she will report her to the social media platform.

Since the unfortunate messages went public, people have been dying to know more about the luxury life and extravagant wedding of Katherine and her new husband, Calbot Asplundh, 27, whose family co-founded a tree trimming company in Pennsylvania now valued at least $3 billion, according to Forbes.

According to social media and their wedding website, the couple met in Prague and bonded over their shared experiences of growing up on the Jersey Shore. Two years later, Cabot proposed to her in Mantoloking, New Jersey.

After meticulous planning, the couple exchanged vows in Palm Beach, Florida, on April 27. The pair went all out for their nuptials, hosting a lavish celebration with their nearest and dearest at the historic Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, where wedding packages start at a cool $10,000.

Despite splurging on their big day, they didn’t shy away from asking their guests for cash gifts, requesting contributions towards their upcoming St.Barts honeymoon, or donations to “furnish their home” on one of their two registries.

Their wedding venue, a 75-room, 100,000-square-foot mansion built in 1902, was once described as “more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world”, according to its website. Today, it’s ranked as the sixth most luxurious wedding venue in South Florida by a wedding photographer.

The venue boasts three grand halls and two expansive courtyards that can accommodate up to 250 guests. To ensure a flawless day, the couple enlisted a large team, including ‘luxury wedding’ planner Heather Lowenthal and event production company Xquisite Events for perfect decor.

They also hired content creation team ‘Follow The Bride’ for ideal social media content during the wedding. Katherine had her hair and makeup done by renowned celebrity stylist Daniela Gozlan, and a professional photographer was on hand to capture everything.

On the wedding day itself, Katherine began with a workout led by celebrity fitness guru Tracy Anderson, who became part of the family when she married Chris Asplundh in 2022.

Snapped carrying multiple shopping bags from French luxury fashion brand Hermes, the bride then posed for a poolside photoshoot with her puppy and bridesmaids, donning a $1,295 silk Mirror Palais dress.

She then changed into her strapless wedding gown, adorned with petal embellishments and featuring a long flowing skirt and massive train. After showcasing the outfit to her friends, family, and soon-to-be husband, they all enjoyed a spectacular champagne tower.

After more snaps, the couple made their way to the venue in a classic black convertible. The ceremony was held in one of the museum’s grand ballrooms, with floor-to-ceiling windows allowing the Florida sunshine to flood in.

The aisle was beautifully decorated with pink and yellow flowers, and a floral archway stood at the end. Following the ceremony, the newlyweds and their guests moved to one of the courtyards for cocktails, where they enjoyed sushi and champagne.

The party then returned indoors for the reception; a sit-down dinner was served before everyone hit the dance floor. The wedding cake was predictably lavish, boasting multiple tiers.

According to social media, Katherine got herself ready for the big day by treating herself to a lymphatic drainage massage, which according to experts, “stimulates your lymphatic system to ensure fluid moves easily through your nodes and tissues, preventing any blockages”.

She also took a “long walk with her mom” and enjoyed a boat ride with close family and friends. Coming from a billionaire family, Cabot and his new wife, Katherine, had two wedding registries featuring a range of expensive items – including a £480 ($600) blender, a £240 ($300) cooler, a £160 ($200) ice cream maker, and a £376 ($470) vacuum.

Also on the lists was a $228 doormat from the brand Serena & Lily, a set of 20 Jean Dubost Laguiole stainless silverware that costs $480, a $195 bowl from BR Home, and a 10-piece set of pans by Greenpan that is priced at $400. If none of those fit your liking, they asked that guests contribute to their “honeymoon in St.Barts” or send money to “help furnish their home”.

Since news of Katherine’s fiery exchange went public, the influencer who had over 14,000 followers on Instagram, appears to have deleted her account from the platform. The messages came about after Katherine wanted to change her handle from @katherinedrisc to @katherineasplundh after the wedding, but the username she wanted was already taken.

Not to be deterred, Katherine contacted the account owner, a woman who goes by Kate, to ask if she could purchase her handle. Kate refused and explained that she feared selling the username would get her banned from Instagram due to it being in direct violation of the platform’s terms of service.

Kate later revealed she would have been open to changing her username but changed her mind after perceiving Katherine’s approach as “snarky”, and subsequently sharing the whole exchange on the internet. In screengrabs of the alleged conversation, Katherine can be seen messaging an anonymous user – presumably Kate, trying to negotiate the purchase of her Instagram handle.

The initial message reads: “Hi I was wondering if I could purchase your username from you. Just got married and this is my new name!” Kate responded: “That’s my name too. I just googled and it said selling my username would get me banned from Instagram.”

However, Katherine disagreed: “I purchased my username in the past actually that’s not true. Celebrities do it all the time that’s how they all have their handles as their full names.” She then added: “So weird, I didn’t know there was another Asplundh’s family out there. There [are] no Katherine Asplundh in our family.”

Adding further to the conversation, she stated: “I see that you’re not that active on here but started Instagram in 2018 but changed your username three times? Is there anyway I can get you to change your username one more time?”

In response, Kate revealed that the @katherineasplundh account is her private ‘finsta’, an account used mainly by users to share private posts with close friends and family. The further exchange became unpleasant, with Katherine doubting Kate’s real identity.

“I actually don’t believe that your name is Katherine Asplundh who would make their finsta their actual name?” Katherine noted. “I reported you to Instagram and they’re actually able to tell me your real name I really hope I don’t know you because that’s gonna be really embarrassing for you.”

When Kate suggested the influencer report her, Katherine assured her that she and her new spouse had already done so. Still skeptical about Kate’s integrity, Katherine claimed that her husband’s side of the family was the only Asplundhs in the country. Kate asserts her non-American identity which prompted Katherine to allegedly respond: “Do you have proof that this is your name? Would love to see that.”

Kate retorts that she would have considered gifting the account username if Katherine’s attitude had been better. She lashes out at the influencer and states, “But you weren’t. I reported you for asking me to sell my account and another for harassing me. Have a good day.”

Kate then shared screenshots of the alleged exchange to Reddit, where it left users outraged. Then, in a karmic twist of fate, internet users have since dug up an old TikTok posted by Katherine, mocking new wives who can’t wait to update their name on social media. She says in the now-deleted video: “Something that low-key bothers me is when girls get married and it’s not even like 10 minutes after they do their vows and they’re like ‘Oh! going on my Instagram! Let me change my last name already’.”

She then says she’s “probably going to wait a couple of months” to change her name. “I just think it’s a little bit a lot when I see girls change it before I even knew they were f****** married, like chill,’ Katherine ironically explained.

Despite her rant about new wives, Katherine contacted the owner of her desired IG handle, a woman who goes by Kate, to ask if she could purchase it, a practice that is in direct violation of the platform’s terms of service.

According to her social media pages, Katherine is originally from New Vernon, New Jersey, having studied at the College of Charleston. Her TikTok page, Lost Etiquette, has amassed over 80,000 followers and her profile has received more than 5.5 million likes. She married into the family that founded Asplundh Tree Expert, a company that reported revenue of over $5.4 billion in 2021.

The tree trimming company was established by three brothers from Sweden – Lester, Griffith, and Cabot’s great-grandfather Carl Asplundh. Cabot’s father, Chris Asplundh, is currently the CEO of the company.
